PFAS Explained

PFAS are widely used, long lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time. A number of studies have linked PFAS to cancers, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, liver damage, asthma, and allergies. PFAS have also been linked with decreased fertility, newborn deaths, low birthweight, birth defects, and delayed development.

Scientific studies have shown that exposure to some PFAS in the environment may be linked to harmful health effects in humans and animals. They build up in our bodies and never break down in the environment. PFAS have been found in some brands of bottled water.

Research is still ongoing to better understand the potential health effects of PFAS exposure over long periods of time. Because they break down very slowly, PFAS are commonly called “forever chemicals.” Their persistence in the environment and prevalence across the country make them a unique water-quality concern.
